This page is intended to answer questions that are frequently asked by visitors. Questions by Master Gardeners on subjects related to activities within the Baxter County Master Gardeners organization should be answered by researching the Volunteer Manual or may be directed to your Mentor.
Questions:
How can I become a Master Gardener?
The Master Gardener program is offered by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. The program is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and to provide community education opportunities through horticultural projects. A 40 hour class is held each year, in the fall, and is usually comprised of 1 day a week for 5 weeks. Class registration may be accomplished by calling the Baxter County Extension office at 425-2335. In the meantime, visitors are always welcome at our regular monthly meetings, so come and see what we are about, and get answers to all of your questions.
Where and when does BCMG meet?
We meet on the second Thursday of most months. We usually don't meet in July, and we occasionally will have some community activity in lieu of a monthly meeting, so go to the Calendar to check before you come. We meet in the Fellowship Hall at the First Presbyterian Church, 1106 Spring Street in Mountain Home.
I was a Master Gardener in another state. May I transfer to your group?
Yes, with the approval of the County Extension Agent, but the 40 hour training class must be satisfactorily completed within the first year of membership.
I am moving from another county in Arkansas. May I transfer to the Baxter County Master Gardener group?
Yes, if you are a member in good standing in the previous county, and with the approval of the Baxter County Extension Agent.
What are sanctioned projects?
Projects which have been approved through the BCMG sanctioning process and remain in good standing are called “sanctioned projects”. A list of these projects is available elsewhere on this website.
Does the group have “unsanctioned” projects?
The group does not administer “unsanctioned” projects. Work performed on non-sanctioned projects may or may not qualify as “other” work hours.
I would like the Master Gardeners to maintain a garden at particular site. How can I get a project sanctioned?
You must complete a Master Gardener Project Proposal form and submit it to the BCMG organization for review.
Where does the group get money to operate?
Funds are generated from member dues and fund raising events, such as an annual public plant sale and seminar.
Where is the County Extension Office located?
The Baxter County Extension office is located at its new office at the corner of Main Street and State Hwy. 5 South. The phone number is 425-2335.
Who supplies the flowers and shrubs we plant at the various projects?
Each sanctioned project chair may request budgeted funds for this purpose. Some are also donated by Master Gardeners and others.
What are SIGs?
SIGs are Special Interest Groups that meet several times a year. At this time the SIGs are, herbs, vegetables, roses, annuals/perennials and composting. Other groups may be added as warranted.
