As you know we started holding a statewide Saturday MG training in central Arkansas three years ago. We rotate where the classes are held in a central Arkansas county. The first year was Pulaski, the second Faulkner, Saline was third and this year Hempstead.
We trained volunteers from seven counties the first year, 10 counties in 2015 and eight counties in 2016. The training is open to all counties, and initial applications are sent to my office as a central clearinghouse. Once we receive them, we make a copy and send it to the local county where the applicant lives. It is then up to the agent and/or your Master Gardeners in the county to interview the applicant and decide whether or not you want them to take the training. You then let me know. They pay their fees to you at the county level, so you may add any additional fees that your county normally charges (t-shirts, dues, etc.) We have included the cost of a nametag up to $8.00. If you charge more for your name badges then add that fee.
We will not train a volunteer who has not been selected by their local county program. We started Saturday training due to the overwhelming requests we were getting from working people who could not take a weekday training class. This alleviates the need to do multiple Saturday trainings in central Arkansas.
Once again, the Saturday training is simply a joint training opportunity. It is not supposed to usurp your normal training schedule or bypass it. We are helping recruit, but you all still need to select the individual and hopefully assign a mentor to them to help integrate them into your local program. Make sure they know other opportunities to take MG training in your county.
We promoted this class at the 2017 Arkansas Flower & Garden Show. Please advertise this program at your local county level. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
