Member Education meeting held April 13, 2017 at the Christian Clinic Meeting Room
Present at the meeting from the new class were Rick Gatewood and Toby Klassen. Also present were Barb Goodlett, Jo Strickland, Kathy Gilmore, Pat Mueske, Donna Munson, Janelle Stookey, Rose Matta, Judy Niziolek, Margereta Schmutzler, Betsy Durham, Jane Druff and Audrey Holt.
This was a good meeting of communication and education. We covered a lot of material and learned new things. For me it was about the Honeyberry shrub and the PBS program “Growing a Greener World” http://www.growingagreenerworld.com/
We discussed possible topics for Horticulture Table and who would present them; Barb Goodlett’s guide to Garden Walks, and where to find the info on the website; Garden Tours planned by Jo Strickland; the BCMG Plant Swap moderated by Pat Mueske held at the Clysta Willett Pavilion on Thursday May 11. There are always plenty of plants to swap and learn about. Come even if you don’t have a plant to share.
It was helpful to have our Plant Sale co-chairs present, Rose Matta and Judy Niziolek, for sharing where the potted signs are stored and can be used for the Plant Swap, as well as some other bits of information.
Finally we discussed plans for the Fair Horticulture room. With a low exhibit turnout especially from the 4H and youth groups there are needs to educate in the classroom, 4H, the community and to our members. Just 19 of our members exhibited Horticulture in the 2016. As Master Gardeners this is another way we can educate others (community and other MGs) by exhibiting our horticulture successes. A program for BCMG on what to exhibit, and how to prepare your entries to be well groomed and fresh would be a teaching and learning experience.
Rick Gatewood, our new member has volunteered to coordinate the Fair Horticulture Event. We discussed how our members who assisted last year and previous years can assist and train in the various portions of the operations from room set-up with decorations and supplies; a smooth intake, placing, judging and tally of exhibits; needs for education materials and staffing. It will be extremely helpful for Rick to have a co-chair. Rick left the meeting with a large binder of Fair Information and signage and a bag of folders and brochures.
Richard Shanahan a member on our committee has given informative presentations is taking a Leave of Absence until he can get his strength back. He would like to help out at the Fair where he has been an important asset in the vegetable department as long as he can be kept off his feet for extended periods of time. Richard also said he might be able to give a Horticulture Table Presentation if needed. Best way to reach Richard is by phone or single, not group email. His contact info is on the roster.
Other topics briefly discussed:
Watch for additional details and information on the Member Education Committee from Barb Goodlett and Jane Druff.
Be on the alert for messages from Rick Gatewood and be available to assist him as he prepares for the 2017 Fair Horticulture Room.
The success of our events and projects comes from communication and cooperation.
There are so many ways to be involved and productive as a BCMG. The rewards are Fun, Fellowship and Education. It is time to continue to be a cohesive group, working, planning, planting and playing together.
For awhile I will be stepping back from chairing committees and the Fair Horticulture Room. I will be available for help when needed. I enjoy the many friendships over the 20 years I have been a BCMG
Are we ready to remember our mission, what Master Gardeners are all about: To give members opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience in horticulture; to extend their volunteer commitment and to share the benefit of this cooperative effort with the community
