Monday afternoon we (John Straight, Jan Halligan, Janelle Stookey, Jane Druff, and I) enjoyed great weather as we put our gardens at Cooper park to bed for the winter -- clipping back the late-bloomers, harvesting a few onions, and adding a blanket of mulch.
We were joined by Carol Rossell-Lesher and Anne Carriere for team photos and to mark the hanging of the BCMG Project of the Year plaque on the Jones cabin's front porch. That we were honored with the award this year has to be because of the team approach we devised, and we are quite pleased. Other active team members this year have included Jim Barlow, Phyllis Henley, and Debby Blakeskee and at least 8 more occasional helpers.
As we were winding up our workday, some walkers asked what we had been doing, and when we pointed to the freshly mulched beds, we received warm, heartfelt thank-you's for our gift of labor for Mountain Home's trail-walkers and park-users.
We look forward to 2017 -- improving the gardens, honoring their historical nature, learning more ourselves, and sharing gardening information with the public through the new, extensive information on the website and with new ways of coordinating the gardens and plants with the website.
We have not won our battle with the invading Bermuda grass, bindweed, and showy primrose -- but we have made a whole lot of progress! And thanks to many, many donated hours of work plus a lot of cooperation from the Park staff and some very good advice from Lucinda Reynolds, Tina Marie Wilcox, Cecilia Gasiecki, Jo Strickland and Audrey Holt, we even feel quite good about our project. That's a long way from the time a few months ago when I put out a call for help to the rest of the BCMG members because our project was getting out-of-control with weedy growth and I was embarrassed to have Master Gardener signs at the cabins. Thank you to everybody!!!
